Gold (XAU/USD): how it differs from currencies

Reading the market: charts, tools and instruments3 min read
What you learn in 3 minutesGold (XAU/USD) is not a currency pair. Its contract size, its pip value and its daily range are all different from EUR/USD. That changes how much money is at risk on each trade. Here you work out the pip value of gold on a small position and compare the stop distance with EUR/USD, in pesos.

A schematic diagram: two price panels side by side. The left panel shows EUR/USD around 1.0850 with a small daily range. The right panel shows XAU/USD with a much taller daily range. A ruler marks one pip on each panel, and the gold pip is drawn wider.

The chart shows gold moving in wider swings than EUR/USD

Open a daily chart of XAU/USD and a daily chart of EUR/USD side by side. The gold chart covers more vertical distance in a single day. A day that moves USD 30 on gold is ordinary. A day that moves USD 0.0300 on EUR/USD is also ordinary. The two look similar in shape but the gold chart travels further in price terms.

That wider travel is not a reason to trade gold more often. It is the reason the same stop distance in pips produces a different peso amount on each chart. A range is the distance between the day's high and the day's low. Gold's range is larger. The stop you place must sit outside the noise of that range, or it will be hit before the market moves your way.

Read the chart from left to right and mark the high and low of the last ten days. Do this on gold, then on EUR/USD. Write the two ranges down. The gold range will be several times the EUR/USD range when both are measured in pips. That difference is the first thing to notice before you calculate any position size.

Why the pip value on gold is smaller than on a currency pair

On EUR/USD, one pip is USD 0.0001. On XAU/USD, one pip is USD 0.01. The two pips are not the same size in dollars. A gold pip is one US cent of the gold price. A EUR/USD pip is one hundredth of a US cent of the exchange rate. The names match but the amounts do not.

The contract size also differs. One standard lot of EUR/USD is 100,000 units of the base currency. One standard lot of XAU/USD is 100 ounces of gold. At 0.10 lots, that is 10 ounces. Your pip value comes from multiplying the ounces by the pip size in dollars. For gold at 0.10 lots, USD 0.01 times 10 ounces equals USD 0.10 per pip. For EUR/USD at 0.10 lots, USD 0.0001 times 10,000 units equals USD 1.00 per pip.

Convert both to pesos using the USD/PHP rate. At ₱58.00, one gold pip is ₱5.80 and one EUR/USD pip is ₱58.00. The gold pip is ten times smaller in peso terms on the same lot size. That is why a stop of the same pip count risks far less money on gold than on EUR/USD. The pip count is not the risk. The pip value times the pip count is the risk.

Setting the stop from the money at risk, not from the pip count

Decide the peso amount you are willing to lose on the trade before you look at the chart. Suppose your plan allows ₱870 on one trade. On gold at 0.10 lots, each pip is ₱5.80. Divide ₱870 by ₱5.80. The result is 150 pips. That is the maximum stop distance in pips for this trade.

Now look at the chart. Find the nearest level that would prove your idea wrong. If that level is 90 pips away, you can place the stop there and risk less than ₱870. If it is 220 pips away, the stop does not fit your plan. You either reduce the lot size or you do not take the trade. The chart does not get to decide the risk. Your plan decides the risk, and the chart decides whether the trade is possible.

The same ₱870 on EUR/USD at 0.10 lots buys only 15 pips, because each pip is ₱58.00. Fifteen pips is a tight stop on a currency pair and may sit inside normal noise. This is the arithmetic that changes between markets. Gold gives you more pips for the same money, but each pip is worth less. EUR/USD gives you fewer pips, but each pip is worth more. Neither is safer by itself. The safety comes from matching the stop to the chart and the money to the plan.

One pip on 0.10 lots of gold, and a 200-pip stop

Same 200 pips on EUR/USD, 0.10 lots₱116One pip on 0.10 lots of EUR/USD is USD 1.00, or ₱58.00. 200 x ₱58.00 = ₱11,600. Wait, that is ten times more. Check: 0.10 lots = 10,000 units. 10,000 x 0.0001 = 1 unit of quote currency per pip = USD 1.00. 200 pips = USD 200 = ₱11,600. So gold at ₱1,160 is ten times smaller for the same pip count

Your broker may round the pip value, charge a spread on top, or quote gold with a different contract size. Swap or financing charges also apply if you hold overnight. All figures here are illustrative.

Doing it once, step by step

You will calculate the pip value for gold in pesos, then use it to find a stop distance that fits a fixed peso risk. Do the steps in order on paper or in a spreadsheet.

  1. 01

    Write down the contract size

Find the contract size for XAU/USD from your broker's specification sheet. It is usually 100 ounces per standard lot. At 0.10 lots, that is 10 ounces. If your broker quotes a different contract size, use that number instead. The rest of the calculation depends on it.

  2. 02

Multiply ounces by the pip size

One pip on gold is USD 0.01. Multiply 10 ounces by USD 0.01. The result is USD 0.10 per pip. This is the pip value in US dollars for your position size. If you trade 0.20 lots, the ounces double and the pip value doubles to USD 0.20.

  3. 03

Convert the pip value to pesos

Multiply the dollar pip value by the USD/PHP rate. At ₱58.00, USD 0.10 becomes ₱5.80. Write this number down. It is the value of one pip on your gold position in the money you spend. If the exchange rate moves, this number changes.

  4. 04

Divide your risk budget by the pip value

Take the peso amount you allow for one trade. Divide it by the peso pip value. With ₱870 and ₱5.80 per pip, the answer is 150 pips. That is the widest stop your plan permits on this position. A wider stop needs a smaller lot size.

  5. 05

Compare the stop with the chart

Mark the level on the gold chart where your idea would be wrong. Measure the distance from your entry to that level in pips. If it is 150 pips or less, the trade fits your plan. If it is more, reduce the lot size or leave the trade. Do not widen the stop to make the trade fit.

  6. 06

    Repeat for any other instrument

Do the same five steps for EUR/USD or any other market. The contract size and the pip size will be different, so the peso pip value will be different. Never copy a stop distance from one instrument to another. Recalculate every time.

The mistake most people make here

People treat gold like a currency pair and use the same stop distance in pips. A 200-pip stop on EUR/USD at 0.10 lots risks about ₱11,600, but the same 200 pips on gold at 0.10 lots risks about ₱1,160. The peso risk is not the same. Always recalculate the pip value for the instrument you are trading, then set the stop so the money at risk fits your plan. Do not copy a stop size from one market to another without doing the arithmetic.

Check yourself

You trade 0.10 lots of XAU/USD. One pip is USD 0.01. The USD/PHP rate is ₱58.00. What is one pip worth in pesos?

0.10 lots = 10 ounces. 10 x USD 0.01 = USD 0.10. USD 0.10 x ₱58.00 = ₱5.80.

You set a 150-pip stop on that gold position. What is the risk in pesos?

150 pips x ₱5.80 per pip = ₱870.

On EUR/USD at 0.10 lots, one pip is USD 1.00, or ₱58.00. How many pips can you risk on EUR/USD for the same ₱870?

₱870 ÷ ₱58.00 per pip = 15 pips.

Questions that come up next

How much does one pip of gold move my account in pesos?

It depends on two numbers you can find on your platform: the lot size and the USD/PHP rate. On 0.10 lots of XAU/USD, one pip is USD 0.01 times 10 ounces, which is USD 0.10. At ₱58.00 per dollar, that is ₱5.80 per pip. If your lot size is different, multiply the ounces by USD 0.01 and then by the exchange rate.

Why is a 200-pip stop on gold cheaper than a 200-pip stop on EUR/USD?

Because one pip on gold is worth less in pesos than one pip on EUR/USD at the same lot size. On 0.10 lots, a gold pip is ₱5.80 while a EUR/USD pip is ₱58.00. So 200 pips on gold risks about ₱1,160, but 200 pips on EUR/USD risks about ₱11,600. The pip count is the same, but the money is not.

Does my broker use the same pip value for gold as the one in this lesson?

Not always. Brokers may round the pip value, quote gold with a different contract size, or apply a spread that changes the effective cost. Some also charge swap or financing fees if you hold the position overnight. Check your own platform's contract specifications before you calculate your risk.

How do I set a stop on gold if I only know my peso risk limit?

Start with the peso amount you are willing to lose, for example ₱870. Divide that by the pip value in pesos for your lot size. On 0.10 lots of gold, ₱870 divided by ₱5.80 per pip gives 150 pips. That is the maximum stop distance in pips that fits your plan. If the chart needs a wider stop, reduce your lot size instead of risking more.

Why does gold move in wider ranges than EUR/USD?

Gold and currencies are driven by different things. Gold often reacts to changes in interest rates, inflation expectations and demand for safe assets, which can cause large daily swings. EUR/USD is influenced by the relative strength of two large economies and tends to move in smaller steps. That is why a day that moves USD 30 on gold is ordinary, while a day that moves USD 0.0300 on EUR/USD is also ordinary.

Can I use the same stop distance in pips for gold and for currencies?

No. The same pip count means a different peso risk on each instrument because the pip values differ. A stop that is safe on EUR/USD may be too tight or too wide on gold. Always recalculate the pip value for the instrument you are trading, then set the stop so the money at risk matches your plan.

The words used on this page

pip
The smallest standard price move quoted for an instrument. On EUR/USD one pip is USD 0.0001, but on gold one pip is USD 0.01. The name is the same, but the size in dollars is not.
contract size
The amount of the underlying asset that one lot represents. For EUR/USD, one standard lot is 100,000 units of the base currency. For gold, one standard lot is 100 ounces.
range
The distance between the highest and lowest price of an instrument during a given period, such as a day. Gold usually has a wider range than EUR/USD when both are measured in pips.
stop
An order that closes your trade automatically when the price reaches a level you set. It limits how much money you can lose on that trade. The distance from your entry to the stop, multiplied by the pip value, gives your risk in pesos.
lot
A unit used to measure trade size. A standard lot of gold is 100 ounces, so 0.10 lots is 10 ounces. The lot size you choose directly changes the pip value and therefore the money at risk.

What to take away

  • Gold is not a currency pair: its contract size, pip size and daily range all differ from EUR/USD.
  • One pip on gold at 0.10 lots is ₱5.80 at ₱58.00 per dollar, while one pip on EUR/USD at the same lot size is ₱58.00.
  • Always work out the pip value in pesos for the instrument you are trading before you set a stop.
  • Set the stop from the money you are willing to lose, not from a pip count copied from another market.
